Agarwood is resin-rich heartwood formed in Aquilaria trees after the wood is stressed or infected. The fragrant material can be distilled into oud oil and is one of the traditional sources behind the oud smell in perfumery. It typically smells deep woody, resinous, earthy, smoky and sometimes leathery or animalic. It usually acts as a long-lasting base note and can make a perfume feel darker, warmer and more complex.
